I've been blogging for nearly two years now, reading other blogs for longer than that, and realized something a little odd. I hardly ever say the word "blog" out loud. Usually I'm writing it or thinking it.
This struck me because one of the Petite Filet's co-workers asked my why the newspaper didn't have columnists, and I told him the main reason was we didn't have room for them. The other big factor was that most people who pitch a column idea don't have anything to write about. Our little weekly paper would require a column on local issues, not on what somebody had for lunch or what their cat is doing. That's when I said it. "Those people should have a blog online instead of in our paper," I told him.
Blog. What a weird word. Maybe it's a Web log, maybe it's a brain log. Either way, its kind of weird when spoken. Especially because this blogger is an island; I don't talk to other bloggers about blogging in person. Therefore, I don't use the word in conversation ...
... say it with me!
Blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog, blog!
Sounds like something else when you say it that much, doesn't it?

I actually like to say "blog". But I have to admit, I didn't read your extended entry out loud. Actually I just scanned it.
Sorry
It sounds like I'm congested. On the rare occasion I do say blog out loud, I am then forced to define the word as an online journal.
It is a weird word.
You can rearrange the letters and make "glob."
I avoid saying the word out loud at all costs. "What did you do today?" "...Uhh, read some stuff online." Anytime I do say it I seem to get a little flushed, and have this lump in my throat, and wonder on the spot whether to do it or not. I know that if I do, I'll get the confused look and will be forced to explain. My husband still doesn't understand the concept, or what a blog really is. I've given up there.
I rarely say it out loud either. Like that other person said, I just say that I do my online writing. But I do have to say that I was disappointed that I clicked on your "read more" link and was subjected to a bombardment of "blogs." Pretty tricky!
it sounds like i might be trying to get something out of the back of my throat.
I think the whole thing is weird, more than just the word. For instance, I read interesting stuff in blogs all the time but I feel weird talking to non-bloggers about it. It's like having imaginary friends or something.
So fun-sounding is the word blog
Sounds so much like frog or wet bog
I don't think it'll be
That special to me
Sitting here on a sawed off log
I read your series of blogs and commited them to memory.
I never say it either because as hard as it is to believe, even with the growing popularity, people still have no idea what I am talking about!
I actually say "blog" a lot and no one knows what I'm talking about!
I'm seeing it more on Fowxnews.com
and even the Dallas Morning news...
I mostly say "blog" to my husband, as in, "The people on my blog say we should do X with the wallpaper."
Last night I told him something about heating vents, and he said, "Did one of your BLOG people tell you that?" Hee hee.
