Thirtyhood

There's something magical that happens after you've turned 30. Depending on the stage in your life at which you hit your third decade, it can be settling or unsettling, wonderful or miserable. For many of us, it's the next "big" number after we turn 21 (although I celebrated 25 because my car-insurance rates went down). I am enjoying life at 31 more than I ever have, and I hope it continues to only get better.

That magic can be of the black kind, too. A combination of slowed metabolism and newfound familial obligations makes for a less active lifestyle. I still exercise regularly, but it's nowhere near the amount I used to. When I was in my 20s, single and fancy-free (and also working a night job), I'd hop on my bicycle and ride literally for hours. You could bounce a quarter off my abs, and I could lift heavy boxes without my arms nearly falling off.

From stud to dud

I exercise about five times a week now, but it's not really enough. I need to lose a little flab and be more diligent about getting enough daily activity. There is a bright spot each morning, though, between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. When I wake up, shower and get dressed for work, catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror isn't half bad. Overnight, gravity worked in my favor to kind of firm everything up a little. After a few walking, waking hours, though, gravity conspires against me to drag everything south. What a bummer.

There are other bright spots in my routine, too. I feel great. I rarely have body aches, pains, soreness or headaches. I can still keep up a good pace while jogging or bicycling. I don't often get sick, and, unless it was my bout with flu late last year, I recover quickly.

But putting on pants is a reminder of Thirtyhood. There's a little tightness sometimes. So far, I have refused to go up another size. I'd like to at least hold steady and not let it get the best of me. Vanity, yes, but both my parents have struggled with weight issues. I'm built a little differently (being a combination of the two), but it's a legacy I've inherited to some degree.

For those of you 30 and above, what are your thoughts? You youngsters need not comment. Your time is coming. :-)

31? I...I don't remember 31. Lemme see, at 31 I had been working for 8 years, had a 2 year old, owned my 1st house, 35 pounds lighter, what was the question?

I fit into the 30 and above category. I go to the fitness center at work every morning, and manage to do about 30 minutes before my day starts. I'm a kind of vegetarian - meat is never my choice - and that's a bonus. Also, sweet deserts etc. have never been good foods for me, so I avoid them.

I've gained a few pounds, but not very many in the past 10 or so years. I'm still the same size as before 30. It's just more of an effort. I guess it's just a fact of life.

Sometimes I feel my age. Most of the time I feel about 7 years younger. Yep, 7. Don't ask me why.

Body wise? Some days really suck. Haha.

Mentally? I feel much different than I did at 21, that's for sure.

A friend of mine told me that everything goes down hill when you turn 30 and he is 37. However he did say that sex gets a lot better with your spouse so I hope that helps ya!

Loaded question....that's for sure. I just turned 32, and I think this is the first year that I realized I was "getting older"...I saw the reality written on the cover of the book....but, honestly...I decided not to read that book. It's one of those things I chose not to think about. I still feel pretty young, and hope to for sometime. :)
