It was a night of cursing Bambinos, a Sox sweep, a shaved dog and a total lunar eclipse fleetingly viewed through parting clouds.
My evening walk with the dog (now shaved) fell into the scheduled time of the eclipse, so we got a nice view of it – except I couldn't get her to look at the moon. I was pleased that several fellow surbananites had left the comforts of their La-Z-Boy® sanctums and bowls of microwave popcorn to view the astronomical spectacle. There was even a Space Nerd with his telescope set up in the street.
Baseball fans, and several who aren't, probably have heard by now that the Boston Red Sox broke the "curse" of Babe Ruth's sale to the New York Yankees after the Sox won the World Series in 1918. From the accounts I've read, though, getting rid of the obnoxious, egotistical, loud fat guy was probably an instant blessing to the Boston clubhouse. There was no curse to blame for the 86-year gap in world championships. In any contest worth its salt, one team wins and one team loses. The Sox just happened to be on the sorry end of it for years and years.
The natural progression of all this, at least in my pea brain, is to use the moon and Red Sox as a life lesson. What's standing in the way of my goals? What's eclipsing my dreams?
• Maybe my dreams aren't feasible.
• I don't have enough money to go for the gold.
• I'm too practical.
• I'm not the world's best dancer.
• People might laugh.
• People might not laugh.
• I'm not meant to pursue those dreams.
• When life hands me lemons, my lemonade tastes too watery.
• I don't have enough time.
• I've never mastered the unicycle.
• I'll probably fail.
• Why bother?
So the answer becomes clear: excuses are the culprit. I'm standing between the earth and moon, blocking the possibilities. Maybe it's time to face the music. Or not. I just need to realize it's my choice and I shouldn't trip over my own feet in the meantime. If this seems vague, it's intentional. Dreams are usually vague. Especially when viewed through slowly parting clouds.

Looking forward to seeing them back in the Series in 2090.
Let's not make fun of space nerds :) Last night was really cool and amazing to see such a large object like the moon change like it did last night.
hey I had my telescope out last night...and my camera. Ok, I'm a space nerd, always have been.
It did take awhile for those clouds to clear out, but when they did, it was beautiful! So cool. I can't remember the last time I saw an eclipse that neat. I tried to take a pic with the digital, but it was just too dark. Drat. What kind of dog do you have? I rescued my mutt from the Humane Society. I can't even get dog food on Saturdays at Petsmart, because I want to take all the little doggies home. Pathetic.
That darn FREE WILL. ;)
