If I was as athletic as I wished I was, you'd see my face on a Wheaties box. Except that I don't know anybody who actually eats Wheaties any more. I'd be lost in a sea of toasted grains with dehydrated fruit, chocolate-chip corn flakes with marshmallows and the like.
I exercise regularly, if not smartly, and stay somewhat in shape. I've eaten some horrible stuff the past few months, and that's not helping matters. I almost can't stand to watch the Olympics because it reminds me I need to be out bicycling, jogging or lifting something heavy. And I feel the need to do crunches and push-ups during commercials.
Here are some of my athletic feats of late:
• My softball team actually won its last game, 16-10. I was a small part of that victory, if not for my suave hitting ability and feet-don't-fail-me-now base running. I'd like to think I would've been more of a factor if my finger hadn't hurt. It's not purple anymore, but it still kind of hurts. I think I sprained it. Our next game is Friday.
• I've not been running as regularly as I need to be, and it showed the past week. My regular route, which includes some killer hills, left me a little wheezy. I'm back on the wagon this week, however, and if I feel strong enough by Thursday (or at least able to breathe), I'm planning to enter a charity 5K run on Saturday. It's called "The Run in the Dark" because it starts at 7:30 p.m. I'm hoping they won't look at me and have to rename it "Run Like a Dork." I'm sure that if I had a running partner like this woman I would be at the head of the pack.
• Me and a couple of buddies installed some new flooring in our front entry way. It's that wood-looking laminate stuff that I've put in two bedrooms and the main hallway as well. You may wonder why this is an athletic feat, but in those few hours I must have walked 30 miles between the front door and the garage. My legs are now hairy tree trunks, which should make me quite the runner at the 5K.
• I mowed the lawn – front and back yard – trimmed the weeds in both and behind the fence. I'm a grass-stained stud now.
Another incentive to do some quick shapework is a planned trip to the beach on Sept. 18-20. We need to get away as a family for a few days, and that little jaunt will be just the trick. The post-Labor Day prices will be better, too, and as long as hurricane season isn't spilling over onto the Texas coast while we're there it will be fun. The Cutlet is probably old enough to enjoy the water this time (the little waves freaked him out a year ago). Hoping fewer people will be there to gawk at my scary man-body, too, if only because parts of me are so white they glow in the dark.
Happy week, all! What's up with you?

you should really be at least on a commercial or something
I, too, need to get back on the exercise wagon. I have been going to physical therapy for my back - and believe me, that is quite a workout. But I need more aerobic stuff. I tried running the other morning but only lasted 20 minutes. Besides, I hate running. Maybe walking...
We're planning a trip to the Jersey Shore (now that I actually have back-up at work).
Good luck in the race. Hairy legs, grass stains and all

Is it actully any where near dark at 7:30 in the Dallas area? Even if you were to walk it, you should be done by 8:30 and I have to think it's barely dark by then.
i'm about to start running after a 10 month pregnancy repreive. if i can find a sportsbra big enough.....
For the sarcastic journalist, she should try Enell sports bras -- they come in large sizes, and you will NOT move in it... Trust me, I won't run in anything but -- and I have NEVER found these in any running stores, except for one in Chgo... (most runners don't have big boobs)
Sorry for the shameless plug... But T, I'm sure you look GREAT! Give me a break. A little slacking for a fit person won't do much damage... Really! I know you live a healthy lifestyle...
AND/OR, you can always do what I do -> I register in at least one 5K a month, 2 in the summer -- and the thought of TRULY sucking helps me find the time to work in regular runs... On the other hand -- I've had to run-walk at times due to injury, and it's not the worst thing in the world... I'm sure you'll be fine. Just race against yourself, set your own pace and desired time -- then keep trying to beat it, by just a little! :)
