Like an April Fool

The Petite Filet is packing her bags, and she and the Cutlet are leaving me.

Of course, it's just temporary! Have you forgotten what day it is?

I often write about their trips to see Grandma and Grandpa. It's a big deal for us to be apart – sappy as it sounds. We have a relationship that doesn't require constant attention – it demands it. To us, that's what love is about. It may sound high-maintenance, but it's not: we simply enjoy each other's company.

We know couples whose work schedules or hobbies eat up a lot of what would be together-time for us. We are in awe (but definitely not envy) of couples who stay close in that sort of arrangement.

When jobs, military deployment or just short out-of-town trips take your sweetie away, it stinks. It never gets easier to drop them off at the airport, either. The only bright side is that absence does make the heart grow fonder. The break is often a healthy reminder of how much you need, want, crave and love the other person. We often take for granted what we are so close to. The love of your life doesn't deserve to be taken for granted, and neither do you. When you've got a kid who leaves on that trip, too, it's a nice, quiet time to reflect on how much you like the noise.

What's really hard about this month is that the PF and Cutlet are leaving on Saturday and will be back Wednesday. Then, two weeks after that, they're leaving again (but probably driving – gasp!) to attend one of the PF's college friend's baby showers. That will be just an overnight trip, but it will be on a weekend – when we normally spend the most time together. I'll manage – temporary married bachelorhood isn't so bad, really.

April Fools Day is special for me in another way. This year marks the 20th year I've lived in Texas. Back in 1984, I was a 10-year-old fifth-grader who really didn't want to pull up the short roots he was growing in his small Virginia hometown. To me, images of Texas included flat, dusty desert land with big cactus. Also, lots of snakes and cowboys riding horses. That image comprises only a part of this big state – love it or leave it – that is now my home.

Nice joke, T-bone! And enjoy your temporary bachelorhood. Stock up on the tv dinners and don't forget to shave!

My husband spends 4 days a week in CT while I am here in NY...it stinks, it's hard and I don't wanna do it anymore!!!! Thanks for letting me vent! -I am so thankful though that I have that special someone to miss!-

Well, having the house to yourself is nice once in awhile- then it's nice when PF and Cutlet come back and you don't have it to yourself! Happy April Fool's day!

My wife works flys from home here in AZ to CA to work 2 days a week. It's just the righ amount of break time. Maybe it's not difficult being that we've had to say good bye for Navy deployments of 5 and 6 months each.

I just have to remember to turn the stereo volume down upon her return.haha

I have been in Texas now now for 13 years, but before Germany, I was here 3 years... Its not where I started but its home now.

Abscesses make the heart grow fonder....I mean abscences make the heart grow fonder.

I must admit, since my visit with Texas I'm quite smitten with it.

OHHH you made my heart jump for a bit there. i forgot it was april fools. shit

I'm glad you're happy in Texas and have seen the whole spectrum of stuff it has to offer. It's not so bad!

Shucks, T-Bone, we're mighty glad to have you!

Kman and I were discussing water shortages in this great state, and in frustration, we came up with the bone-headed brainstorm that all non-native Texans "go home". Very unchivalrous of us, but then we got to thinking how many of our friends we would be banishing, so back to the blackboard!

i feel the same way. matt had NCAA tournament tickets last weekend and was gone for two nights. i just sat and stared at the walls...i missed him soooo much! however, it has been so fun to get well acquainted again this week!
