Nawlins Bound

A good college buddy is getting married in March. He lives in Orlando now, and because there are still a few good friends of his in Texas, the bachelor party weekend meets somewhat in the middle at New Orleans early next month.

Haven’t seen the guy in quite some time. I went to high school with his college roommate, and I haven’t seen him for a while, either. It’s like a Pasty White Boy Reunion (although the groom-to-be’s Florida address has probably rendered him some sort of tan).

Not invited to the weekend celebration is that obnoxious, overzealous party animal who rears his inebriated head each mid-February in the Crescent City. You know who I’m talking about: Marty Graw. Ol’ Marty inspires way too much public nudity for my taste, and the last thing I need are beads. Plus, everything gets more expensive as hordes of revelers descend to the French Quarter to let loose before Lent. Being Baptist, I don’t observe Lent (we’re uptight all the time, am I right?). And while every weekend in Nawlins is a party of some degree, it will be quieter than the full-blown Marty Graw 2004 explosion.

But it’s going to be a rip-roaring time anyhow, I can imagine. After work on that Saturday morning, I’m planning to fly down there and cut as loose as a tied T-Bone can get. I’ve reformed from my college days of drinking until I grew gills. I am now at my limit after three tasty adult beverages (one genuine Hurricane my knock me on my flank steak as it is). The others, I don’t know their current imbibing habits. If college was any indication, I’ll be the designated cab-hailer when it’s time to head back to the hotel, because they will have given their liver quite a romp.

Does anyone have any good travel/eating tips for New Orleans? Because I’m flying in a day later than everyone else, I may end up staying a day after everyone leaves (not having to work Monday). That means I’ll have at least part of the day to knock around the city by my lonesome. I already know not to take candy from strangers or sacrifice any animals while I’m there (some sort of city ordinance). Any tips?

Have a great day today, friends, neighbors and plugged-in world citizens!

I don't have any suggestions for you. I have only been to New Orleans once. I loved it! I really want to go back.

BTW, we are always uptight. ;)

I'm very familiar with New Orleans, T-bone. I just sent you an email about this; let me know if you want to discuss.

Yeah- don't have more than one hurricaine. Last time I did, I passed out cold in the middle of the street in front of Pat O'Brian's!

No tips, but have a good and safe trip!

No tips either...but everyone I know who has been there enjoyed it.

Try not to get plastered by your bredrens!

The authors at gilbertv.com take annual trips there (note: we never mention it, and nothing is published for good reason)... but I'll say this:

THE QUARTER IS HIGHLY OVERRATED

Uptown is where the good bars are at - the locals type of pubs and what have you. Try Bruno's Bar on Maple in uptown. Visit www.brunosbar.com, which is where I'll be Feb 19 - 20 at night.

Now, if you want the girly atcion... well, just e-mail ol' Gilly and he will give you the places to visit so you can, uh, enjoy some, er, uh, "gentlemen's entertainment."

But in all seriousness, the real stuff is not the Quarter. Leave that to the inexperienced tourist.

felix's - the best oysters and po boys ever.

and if you find good places, let me know cause i'll be down there in april for jazz fest

Felix's is THE BOMB. If you want a good Shrimp Po-Boy, try Crazy Johnny's steakhouse: it's a local NO chain, I know the lady's nephew. They have great steaks, too... reasonably priced. I know, I know, it's Cajun Country... but the place is THE BOMB (to use current kid vernacular).

Sighhh. Wish I was going to New Orleans. The music. Harry Connick.

Someday. Someday.

I have one suggestion --- have a lot of fun!!

My brother lives there, and every time we go they take us 'round to all of the neat places, but unlike others who have commented I love the Quarter. You can feel the history there. Whatever you do, it will be fun. I'm going there end of March to celebrate my 50th birthday. it's the best place for a party!

Hey T-Bone. Haven't heard from you in a while. How's the new year, new job going?

if you happen to pass out in the street...make sure you are wearing inexpensive shoes. i had a friend who did this...they stole the shoes of his body! there are a lot of naked girls running around though...they prolly need all of the clothing they can get their hands on.

My FAV place! And hey, Gil, I lurve the French Quarter. So old. Especially love it at night, even with the crazy tourists. T-Bone - I love the Confederate Museum that is near the Canal. But that's just me. Also, I enjoy food at the Gumbo Pot. I am envious! Pack me in your suitcase!

Wow. Sounds like a great time! The only tip I have is that you should eat lots and lots of bread products. 3 adult size beverages aren't going to get you far at this kind of shin dig!

Go slow and DO IT UP!

Have a great weekend buddy.

Watch out for vampires and other things that want to suck your blood.

there are some great places on Royal St. Can't remember any names right now- but check it out down there...

I've never been. Must be living in a closet. But I can relate to the not being able to drink much anymore. lol Like your blog.
