The MeMe’s and YouYou’s

Danger: Sarcasm Ahead. Proceed with Caution.

You’re bound to see a lot of blog awards going on, considering we have entered the 12th month of this Year of our Lord, 2003.

There’s one such event here. (Link via Adelle.)

You can apparently nominate yourself, or your favorite blogs. I hope someone nominates me for the Ecosystem Flappy Birds category. I’ve worked hard to trumpet the plight of flappy birds worldwide, and could use the recognition to further my cause. Poor flappy birds!

I’ve got no beef against this blog contest specifically, just the idea of them in general. Here’s some truths about “best of blogging” lists:

1. The majority of nominees and winners will be blogs I’ve neither read nor heard of.

2. When you nominate yourself, it kind of cheapens any sort of victory.

3. Bragging rights do not a good blog make.

4. I think most organizers do such projects for fun. A few people who participate, however, take the whole thing too seriously. That makes it rather unfun.

5. Sour grapes because I’ll never win anything? Um, maybe.

I liken the goodness factor of blogs to cars.

I may drive a vehicle that is perfect for me. I may like: how the seat cushions my rear perfectly, the way it handles, the cargo room, the gas mileage, the way it looks. To me, it’s the perfect car.

However, other people have their own versions of perfection, their own butt sizes, their own priorities in handling, cargo room, gas mileage and looks (and other priorities altogether). That is how so many different companies can produce so many different cars and stay in business. There is no “one size fits all” car. Same with a blog. So many factors, of ourselves and the blogs, come into play to form something we consider good.

So, what is the Best Blog? For me, it changes every day. It can be the one that piques my curiosity, one that teaches me something new, one that makes me smile, one that makes me laugh, one that makes choke back tears. I do have favorite bloggers, but their blogs aren’t always my favorites.

The beauty of blogging is that every address has the potential to offer something unique and special. Do all blogs do that? No, they don’t. Does attracting a wide audience make a blog better? No, it doesn’t. Does having a small readership make a blog worse? No, it doesn’t. The proof is in the test drive. It’s why every blog author has a unique list of links, and a unique set of readers and, although some may be similar, a unique collection of ideas.

I guess the bottom line is, that if you participate in such things, good for you! Hope you enjoy it! Give my regards to the "winner"!

Gotta go ... I need to check up on my poor flappy bird friends. They’re nesting today!

Being new to the whole blog thing.... How does all this work? Is there any prize or is it just a "title"?

I generally agree with you. There are some people who take themselves way to seriously (in real life as well as in the blog world). The one good thing is sometime through those awards I find a good new one to read. Though, really the best promotion is through word of mouth and links from other blog you like. People tend to link to those blogs similar to their way of thinking.

ok, i got all excited because i'm an attention whore, and went over and nominate you, me and deb (smitten) for best new blog. i don't understand the ecosystem thing in the slightest. i haven't heard of any of the nominees there, anyhow. i know we're all winners at heart, so what happens with these awards, who really cares.

I guess it is a self-esteem booster. Personally, I would like it better if I got a prize. I like prizes.

Who cares about prizes or recognition? I just want to get the girl. That's what blogs are for, getting the girl. So far, I'm not up to snuff. But I come here for my daily puns Tex.

you are a big wiener...ummmm...i mean winner. you are a pure winner in my book!

Now T, you know if you won you would be right there with the rest of us jumping for joy and taking up the mic like Halle Berry did at the Oscars. Admit it..... lol

Dammit, T. You know I can't resist a good down-and-dirty popularity contest.

Every blog is different....some days I know my writing amounts to hot air...others it may be better,...but I think we all go through periods like that. Like life in some ways...it has its high as well as low periods.

Keep blogging:-)
