Me and the fam ventured to Dallas for the State Fair of Texas. The weather was absolutely perfect – not too hot, not too cold (a meteorological McDLT). Sunshine. A light breeze. Foooood. Family fun.
Here's a brief wrapup:
1. The train ride was excellent. That is definitely THE way to travel from Fort Worth to Dallas. We had no traffic or parking worries to face. The bus ride ... well, was a bus ride. Public transit introduces you to some woolly characters from time to time. No misadventures to report, but we almost missed our bus back to the train station. Trains in the Metroplex don't run every 15 minutes ... it would have been four hours later before we could catch another train all the way back to our starting point.
2. If any of my fellow Texans or nearby residents are planning a trip to the fair, I highly recommend a weekday – if your work schedule permits. We didn't have the place to ourselves, but there were virtually no lines to anything we wanted to eat or see. I didn't want to ride the Texas Star alone, and the P.F. didn't want to ride it at all. However, there was almost nobody in line.
3. The fair food was predictably delicious. Well, except for the fried Twinkie®. I think it was good, but a bit overhyped from its debut at the fair last year. Me likes my Twinkies® right out of the package, me thinks. However, a Fletcher's corn dog, some ice cream and a barbecue sandwich made me momentarily forget my disappointment.
4. We caught a Border collie dog show, which was lots of fun. We have a Border collie, and despite her relative lack of training, I bet she could have herded those ducks and sheep in a similar manner (having done so to small children and party guests more than once).
5. Petting zoo! I got some great pictures, which, out of context look like we kept offering the Cutlet up as food to several strange beasts. I think the little guy enjoyed it, though. Except when the "zebu" or whatever it was took the entire cup of feed from the Petite Filet. That was uncool, dude.
6. It's hard to see everything you want to see in one day. However, it will take up to a year for us to want to go back.
7. There's a really cool bar across from one of the entrances that saved our bacon. I won't say how, but we'll have to go back and have a round to honor it properly.
8. You know, most of my lists round out at an even number, but this one won't. I'm on vacation!
Hang in there, y'all. Just four more workdays until the weekend! And isn't a weekend just a miniature vacation for most of us? Keep it real!

Great picture! Cutlet looks like he's having a blast!
That's an awesome pic! That smile is precious!! :)
looks like the cutlet was prepared for motion sickness....he's too cute, man!! I'll take your advice and try the fair on a weekday if time permits. I haven't been in about 3 years, and that's just wrong!!!
looks like he is having the time of his life!
Glad you guys had a good time. I need to set aside some time to stop down over there
What a pumpkin doodle, that Cutlet! Oh my gosh, I can't get over how cute he is. Either he's just an amazingly happy baby, or you never try to take pics of him when he's doing anything but smiling!
He's adorable, the PF is beautiful, and it looks like you guys had a great time. Enjoy your vacation!
I'm not really sure about that whole deep fried twinkie thing. Up here at the local exhibition the popular thing to eat is mini-donuts. You get two bags for $5 covered in cinnamon sugar. They're so yummy. After I scarf them down though, I realize that there's this big lump of dough in my tummy and I know i'll feel nasty later. But during...mmmm...sugary goodness.
Cutlet looks like he's having a blast! And Mom looks radiant!
Enjoy your time off, T.
The cutlet is a DOLL!
Glad you're enjoying your vaca.
Fairs and carnivals are the BEST!
Ohhhh Cutlet looks adorable! Now you are getting me excited to go to the Fair. I always go during the week. In my book, that is the only way to do it!
So glad you had fun!
Looks like tons of fun! I've been to 2 fairs this year so far, the Orange County Fair and the LA County Fair and have yet to try a deep fried Twinkie. Just doesn't sound appealing. As if a Twinkie isn't enough of a heart attack in a box, then you had oil? Sounds like enough calories to last a month!
Great pic of cutlet & pf. It sounds like you had a great day.
Oh man, and I said I didn't want any more babies - that smile just tells me I'll have to!
I want to hear the story about the bar that saved your hides personally *big grin* ~ that photo is just too cute!!! Speedbump's office has the Cotton Bowl reserved for the company in a few weeks ~ that is when he and I are going with the kids ~ the kids will go several times with their Nannie and Poppie ~ Who knows maybe he and I will venture out there without the kids while they are with the grandparents. I don't ride the rides at the fair but my Q15 loves them ~ I guess we'll all have to go so you'll have a ride partner *grin*.
What, no deep fried 3 Musketeers? C'mon!
The Cutlet looks so unbelievably adorable. I am one jealous mama-wanabee.
happy vacation!
sounds like a fun trip. fried twinkies? wth. people will fry anything i guess..
now sauteed twinkies in a nice garlic & pine nut-infused olive oil with mint pesto and grated parmesan cheese...
That is a great picture! Enjoy your vacation!
Cute phot of your family!! They looked like they were having fun. Ok, do tell us what the bar did to save your hides. Did they give you a towel because you forgot to pack enough diapers?
That's a beautiful picture- not just the subjects, but the whole frame- it looks like you had it done in a studio. That's one for the wall, I think!
cutlet and momma are so cute! thats a great pic. Hope yall had a blast. I was invited to go to the State Fair this weekend but didnt want to drive all that way - its so far across TX! glad you got to enjoy it though! :)
