Some people subscribe to the feng shui placement of objects and elements in their lives to maximize the positive energy flow – chi – and reduce the negative energy flow – toestubbingness. Well, no matter what you call it, changing things around can certainly modify your perspective.
The recent strain of rearrange-derangement was caught in our living room. The furniture was essentially in the same place for nearly two years, which was when we bought our new sofa and chair, new pillows and an ottoman. The placement allowed positive traffic flow, but we were getting tired of it.
Once we found a new and exciting way to angle our crap, several positive things did occur:
1. We moved our TV and the reception immediately improved to where we can now watch channels we never knew we had. This is important when you don’t have cable and you’re limited to 8 and 1/2 channels no matter what.
2. The 1970s La-Z-Boy recliner with its strange Colonial pattern and hideous tan, brown, orange and green color scheme, is placed to allow better access to our sliding glass door to the back yard. I’ve mentioned this before but I’ll say it again: it is the ugliest chair in our house, yet the most comfortable. That’s why we still have it.
3. Our comfortable (and not ugly) brown leather sofa is now positioned for more natural TV viewing. I can lay on the sofa in a relaxed, wet-noodle fashion, and not miss a single puzzle on "Wheel of Fortune."
4. The fireplace is now less cluttered, which is good and bad. If we ever build a fire in it, the whole room will be aglow with the warm romantic, dancing flames. The Petite Filet and I will hold each other tight, caressing the intimate curves of our bodies. Then, the Cutlet will crawl into the room and over to the fireplace, bonking his head on the sharp edge (this will be somewhat remedied by a protective bumper to be installed this weekend).
5. The room looks bigger. This is always a goal of mine when placing furniture. T-Bone’s secret tip: the more floor you can see, the bigger the room will look.
So the disease then spread to our bedroom, which was already under constant flux because the attached bathroom is being renovated by yours truly. Positives of the new placement includes more visible floor and an easier path to the bathroom for late-night calls of nature. That is, once the toilet is installed again and not covered with tools and sawdust.
Yesterday before heading home for the evening, I relocated the desk in my office. I previously had the doorway to my right, which meant stealthy co-workers could sneak up on me before you can say “cover up that blog page with something that looks like you’re working.” Actually, quicker than you can say “taco.”
Now I am positioned facing the door. The positive energy in this arrangement manifests itself with:
1. Safer blogging.
2. Frequent naps during the day.
3. A more “nookish” feel akin to a nice, warm, fluffy cocoon.
4. Better view of the clock hanging on the wall (is this a bad thing maybe?)
5. Ability to continue working while somebody is in front of me yammering away for what seems like hours, simultaneously maintaining eye contact with the person and my computer screen.
I still have to find a place for my lava lamp, but then I'm all set!

great blog. i dig your writing style and that cool steak graphic. keep it coming.

Sounds like progress. Everyone needs a change every now and then.
Have a great weekend. By the way, don't you have a big b-day coming up?
Yeah, I was really into Feng Shui a few years ago- had all my floorplans aligned on compass points and everything! Yeah, you can get as into that as you want, evidently.
I thought it was interesting to note that all the big Vegas casinos hire masters of the art to arrange the tables and slots for maximum cash flow (from your pocket outward, that is...)
That's the reason so many of them have lions in front- that's for bad luck to the establishment across the street! One book I read even advocates burying the lions so as to maximize the curses! Very interesting stuff, to say the least!
The most I got out of it was the furniture placement and clutter clearance. It just feels better when you plan your space in certain ways.
i need to do some more research into this feng shui technique, especially bedroom feng shui. perhaps the reason i am still single is because my chi is out of wack. hmmm...
Have you ever thought about re-doing your chair with fabric that's more pleasing to the eye?
Hate that yammering.
I am always rearranging my furniture. If not for comfort, just to have something new to look at.
Facing the door actually *is* recommended by feng shui. It's so nobody can sneak in and stab you in the back, but hiding the blog screen is good too.
I am so totally impressed. But really, I should be working and not sneaking blog commenting.
Our furniture was in the same place for 7 years! We just rearranged and it feels like we have a new house!!!
if you take the advice of the Queen Goddess, make sure you finish the toilet before you recover the chair. priorities Mister!
Well when you finally make it over here you can help me figure out how to rearrange my living area's ~ as stated many times over ~ I have way too much crap around my house!!!

I've always positioned my desk so I'm facing the door. I hate surprises!
I was thinking of rearranging my furniture the other day - but there really isn't any other way to put things - unless I flipflop the dining area with the living area. (don't ask)
I do other things - like rearrange the black & whites on my walls or replace artwork and change the rugs.
Increasing floor space really is the key!
THAT made me laugh :)
So, I have to ask you a question since you asked me 5, and I still don't know if you've been over to read my answers, but does Petite Filet know about your blog? Jerry knows that I have one, but I don't even talk about it anymore, and he doesn't ask. If he did, OMG, shit would hit the fan!
Nookish? Nookish sounds niceish,
